Stray Dog Found at Texas Gas Station Finds a New Life

On an ordinary afternoon in San Antonio, Texas, a quick stop for gas turned into something unforgettable for Donna Killough.

As she prepared to leave the station, her eyes caught sight of a strange bundle moving near the pavement.

At first glance, it looked like nothing more than a pile of tangled fur. But then two timid eyes blinked back at her.

A Chance Encounter With a Desperate Little Dog

The tiny figure wasn’t just a stray dog — she was heartbreak wrapped in knots of matted hair.

Donna could see how fragile and desperate the pup was, yet the dog wouldn’t let her come too close. Something about the way she lingered gave Donna the impression she was starving but still cautious.

Hoping to help, she gently placed a few potato chips on the ground.

The little dog crept forward only when Donna turned away, quickly gobbling down the crumbs as though she hadn’t eaten in days.

It was clear this dog needed far more than a snack. And in that instant, Donna knew she couldn’t simply drive away.

A New Beginning for Daisy

Help came in an unexpected form.

A man nearby noticed the frightened dog too, and to Donna’s surprise, he happened to have a humane trap in his vehicle.

With some food set inside, the pup cautiously sniffed around, and within minutes, she stepped right in. For the first time in who knows how long, she was safe.

Donna carried her home, setting her gently in a crate inside the garage so she could rest without pressure.

The little dog seemed unsure, both curious and hesitant. But then came a moment that changed everything.

Donna’s husband, Trace, reached his hand toward the crate, and instead of retreating, the pup leaned forward and softly licked his fingers.

A door had opened. Not long after, she climbed straight into Donna’s lap, as if she had finally decided to trust.

Right then and there, Donna spoke the words her heart already knew: “I love this dog.” They named her Daisy.

The following day, Daisy was brought to a groomer who specialized in rescues.

Hours of careful work revealed the sweet face and soft body hidden beneath the heavy mats. With each snip of the clippers, Daisy’s spirit seemed to lighten.

When the last knot fell away, she pranced with a joy that had been locked inside her for far too long.

For the first time, she could move freely — and she made the most of it, bouncing and playing like a dog rediscovering her youth.

At the veterinarian’s office, the news was better than expected. Daisy was riddled with fleas and her skin was irritated, but overall she was healthy.

There was no microchip, no trace of an owner. Donna posted notices across the city and online, searching for anyone who might claim her. Weeks passed with no reply.

A few people recalled seeing her wandering the streets, but no one stepped forward to say she belonged to them.

DONNA KILLOUGH

The vet estimated Daisy to be about 18 months old. That meant she might have survived outside on her own since she was only a puppy — a sobering thought for anyone who has ever loved a dog.

A Forever Home Filled With Love

From that moment on, Daisy’s life was no longer uncertain.

Donna and Trace chose to make her part of their family, promising she would never be hungry, lonely, or lost again.

DONNA KILLOUGH

Though Daisy adapted quickly, her past life left a few lingering marks.

One of her quirks is hiding food. Perhaps remembering the days when every bite was precious, she tucks away treats in the couch, buries biscuits in her bed, and even once dropped a mouthful of wet food under Donna’s pillow.

It is her way of making sure she never goes without.

DONNA KILLOUGH

Over time, Daisy has blossomed into a dog almost unrecognizable from the broken little creature at the gas station. Her coat now shines, always freshly brushed.

She fills her days with games, long walks, and endless cuddles. She also discovered a deep bond with the family’s four cats.

Instead of conflict, there’s harmony: Daisy and the cats nap together, groom one another, and share a kind of friendship few would expect.

Watching Daisy curl up beside Trace on the couch, or lick one of the cats gently on the head, Donna often reflects on the strange twist of fate that brought her into their lives.

DONNA KILLOUGH

“God thought we needed this dog, and this dog needed us,” she says softly. And in Daisy’s joyful eyes, it’s easy to see she feels the same.

What began as a chance meeting outside a gas station became a story of rescue, renewal, and love. Daisy didn’t just find a home — she found a family who adores her for exactly who she is.
