Brooke Morosca expected friendship bracelets and a fun weekend with loved ones, but a chance encounter with two struggling strays led to months of waiting, one 12-hour drive, and a rescue she’ll never regret.
Brooke Morosca traveled to New Orleans in October 2024 for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour with close friends and family.
She expected music, memories, and plenty of friendship bracelets.
Instead, on the way to the Airbnb, she spotted a yellow Labrador lying in the middle of the road.

The dog was covered in dirt and fleas, so Morosca got out of the rental car to check on her.
A second dog soon appeared from the bushes nearby.
He was a small black pup, extremely thin and clearly struggling.
Even so, both dogs were sweet right away, which only made Morosca more worried about the condition they were in.
She gave them food and water, and the pair followed her to the Airbnb.
For all four nights of her stay, the two pups slept on the porch.
They were playful at times, but they were also nervous.
They startled easily, and it was obvious they were still living in survival mode.

As the days passed, though, the black dog began to relax around Morosca.
One moment on the porch changed everything for her.
While she was petting him, he leaned his head into her hand and closed his eyes.
Morosca watched his whole body soften.
That small gesture felt like a breakthrough.
It told her he was beginning to trust her.
From then on, she knew she wanted to take him home if she could.
But before doing anything, she needed to find out whether the dogs belonged to someone.

She asked around locally for information.
She also contacted her Airbnb host, hoping someone would know where the pair had come from.
No clear answers came.
By the last day of her trip, Morosca knew she could not just leave the dogs behind without trying to get them help.
So she brought both pups to Jefferson Protection and Animal Welfare Services, or JPAWS, in Louisiana.
There, she learned the situation was more complicated than she had realized.
The dogs were part of an ongoing neglect case.
Until everything was sorted out, they would be placed on an intake hold.

Morosca had to return home to Florida without them.
Still, she refused to let the story end there.
She called the shelter every day for a month.
Then she kept checking in as the weeks turned into months.
After four months of waiting, the black dog she had bonded with finally became available for adoption.
Morosca got in the car and drove 12 hours to Louisiana to bring him home.
When she saw him again, she barely recognized him.
Thanks to the care he received at the shelter, he had gained 30 pounds.

The once fragile pup looked healthier, stronger, and ready for a new start.
She named him Rhysand.
Soon after arriving home, Rhysand made it clear he was more than ready to enjoy the comforts he had missed for so long.
He developed a love for stuffed toys.
He adored soft blankets and cuddling on the couch with Morosca.
The dog who had once been painfully thin and sleeping outdoors settled in quickly.
Morosca came to think of him as her soul dog.
She has said she cannot imagine what her life would look like if she had not found him.

But even as Rhysand thrived, there was still another dog on her mind.
Morosca could not stop thinking about the yellow Lab from the road.
She felt as if she had failed her by not being able to bring her home too.
The Lab was heartworm positive and still not available for adoption, so once again Morosca had no choice but to wait.
Then one night in July, five months after adopting Rhysand, she had a feeling that she should check the shelter’s website.
The first dog listed for adoption was the yellow Lab.
Morosca dropped everything and drove to Louisiana to rescue her.
This time, though, she knew she did not have the capacity to permanently take in a second dog herself.
Fortunately, one of her friends was already invested in the Lab’s story.
Giulia Carlton learned what the dog had been through and wanted to help.
She and her fiancé, Harry, decided to adopt the Lab and name her Crumpet.
According to Morosca, they fell in love with her right away.
Crumpet also fit beautifully into their lives.
Best of all, Crumpet now lives just 15 minutes away from Morosca and Rhysand.
That means the two dogs who once slept together on a porch still get to see each other often.
They have frequent playdates.
They even celebrated their birthdays together.
Morosca has said Rhysand knows exactly when they are heading to Crumpet’s apartment.
He gets hyper and excited before they even arrive.
For two dogs who started out frightened and neglected, that reunion is especially sweet.
Rhysand’s family story kept growing after that.
In February, a stray cat began showing up on the patio outside Morosca’s home.
Rhysand was immediately drawn to her.
He watched her through the glass door.
He even brought her toys while she lingered outside.
The cat came back every day, and the two would lie on opposite sides of the door together.
Eventually, Morosca took the cat to the vet and later brought her inside.
Once the stray, now named Feyre, got the care she needed, Morosca gave her time to decompress.
After that, she introduced Feyre to Rhysand.
The two became fast friends.
Now Feyre is the newest member of the family.
Morosca hopes Rhysand’s story inspires other people to help animals in need.
She believes strays like Rhysand, Crumpet, and Feyre deserve a chance.
Her experience makes a powerful case for that belief.
A trip planned around a concert became the beginning of several rescues.
A porch became a temporary safe place for two vulnerable dogs.
One chance encounter on a road in New Orleans turned into a life with Rhysand, regular playdates with Crumpet, and a home that eventually opened to Feyre too.
The facts of the story are simple, but the feeling behind them is bigger.
Morosca saw animals in trouble and chose not to look away.
She kept asking questions when she did not have answers.
She kept waiting when the process was slow.
She kept driving back when the animals she loved finally needed her to show up.
Rhysand’s journey also says something important about rescue dogs themselves.
The black pup Morosca first met was thin, scared, and uncertain.
With time, care, and consistency, he became affectionate, playful, and secure enough to welcome a new feline friend into his world.
Crumpet’s path matters too.
She did not end up forgotten after those nights on the porch.
She found a family of her own and still gets to stay connected to the dog who shared those first hard days with her.
That is the kind of ending Morosca had hoped for all along.
She wanted both dogs to get the chance they deserved.
In the end, they did.
And for anyone wondering whether stopping to help a stray can really change a life, Rhysand is the answer.
