Poleng Looked Like Stone on the Street, Until Rescue Revealed the Sweet Dog Beneath

After a family in Indonesia asked Little Steps Matter to help a desperately suffering stray, Poleng went from one of the worst mange cases rescuers had ever seen to a goofy, adored dog with a forever home.

Poleng had been abandoned on the streets of Indonesia, and by the time help found him, his body showed just how much he had suffered.

He wandered into a community where one kind family began feeding him and keeping an eye on him.

They cared about him deeply, but they could also see that food and concern were not going to be enough.

When a team member from Little Steps Matter was helping another dog nearby, that family approached and asked if they could help Poleng too.

The rescuers agreed to take a look, and what they saw stunned the entire team.

Little Steps Matter later wrote on Instagram that the moment they saw Poleng, it was clear he had suffered tremendously.

His body was ravaged by severe mange, and his skin was painfully inflamed beneath thick, crusted layers.

The buildup was so heavy that the rescuers said he almost looked as though he had turned to stone.

It was immediately clear that he needed urgent medical care, not just kindness from a distance.

Even for an experienced rescue group, Poleng stood out in the most heartbreaking way.

Little Steps Matter said they had never seen such a bad case of mange before.

There was no time to waste once they understood how serious his condition was.

They rushed him straight to the vet for intensive care.

At that point, his recovery seemed likely to be long and difficult.

His body had endured extreme damage, and no one could know how quickly he might respond to treatment.

Still, for the first time in a very long while, Poleng was somewhere safe.

That safety mattered just as much as the medicine.

For a dog who had been left on the street in terrible pain, rescue meant relief was finally possible.

It also meant he no longer had to endure his suffering alone.

Severe mange does not heal overnight, especially in a case this advanced.

Yet Poleng surprised everyone with how quickly he began to change.

After only two weeks, he already looked like a completely different dog.

The hard crusts started falling away, and healing skin appeared underneath.

As the physical pain eased, something else changed too.

Poleng began allowing the people around him to come closer.

“After all the scraps had fallen off and his skin was healing, he allowed us to touch him,” Sabine Kaufmann, founder of Little Steps Matter, told The Dodo.

That moment said so much about how deeply his pain had shaped his behavior before.

A dog who is hurting that badly often cannot relax into affection, no matter how loving he may be.

Once treatment started working, Poleng began accepting the cuddles he had been too uncomfortable to enjoy before.

The more he healed, the more his gentle personality started to shine through.

Despite everything he had been through, Poleng revealed himself to be an incredibly sweet dog.

The fear and misery surrounding him at first did not define who he really was.

Underneath the severe skin disease was a loving pup who still wanted connection.

That transformation made his rescue all the more moving.

He had not only needed medical help to survive, but comfort and patience to rediscover joy.

As his condition improved, the rescue team got to see more and more of the dog hidden beneath the suffering.

He became softer, more trusting, and more affectionate with every passing day.

After making significant progress, Poleng returned to the same family who had first stepped in to help him.

That detail mattered because they were the ones who had refused to ignore him when he needed someone.

They had fed him, watched over him, and asked rescuers for help when they realized his needs were beyond what they could provide.

For a little while, it seemed possible that Poleng might stay there.

Unfortunately, the family was not able to keep him long-term.

So while his health was improving, his search for lasting stability was not over yet.

He still needed the right place to continue healing while waiting for a permanent home.

Little Steps Matter then found Poleng a foster home.

There, he was able to keep recovering in a calmer setting while settling into everyday life.

That next chapter gave him consistency as well as care.

Instead of simply surviving treatment, he was now getting the chance to thrive.

Day by day, the miserable dog who had shocked rescuers at first grew into a happier and more relaxed companion.

His progress became visible not only in his skin, but in his whole personality.

This was no longer just a story about a medical emergency.

It was becoming the story of a dog learning how good life could feel.

The people following Little Steps Matter online were able to watch that change happen in real time.

Among them was the family who would eventually become Poleng’s own.

Four months after his rescue, his forever family finally found him.

They had fallen in love with him after watching his journey on Little Steps Matter’s social media pages.

They saw where he began, watched his recovery unfold, and knew they wanted to give him the loving home he deserved.

That made his adoption especially meaningful.

They did not simply meet a healthy dog at the end of the process.

They understood his full story and chose him with all of it in mind.

After everything he had endured, Poleng was finally heading to a home where he would be cherished for good.

Now, according to Kaufmann, Poleng is living a dream life with that family.

“They adore him so much,” she said.

Kaufmann also said he was really the worst case they had ever seen, and then turned out to be the most goofy, funny, sweetest boy.

That contrast is what makes his story so unforgettable.

The dog who once looked almost like stone from severe, crusted mange is now known for his joyful spirit.

His life changed because one family cared, one rescue team stepped in, and many people kept believing in his future.

Poleng’s journey followed a remarkable but true arc: abandonment, emergency rescue, intensive veterinary care, steady healing, foster care, and finally a forever home.

His story is also a reminder of how much difference early compassion can make.

If that family had looked away, Poleng might never have reached the people who could save him.

Instead, they noticed his suffering, fed him, and asked for help when they knew he needed more than they could give.

Little Steps Matter carried that effort forward and gave him the treatment and patience required to recover.

By the time the right adopters found him, Poleng was no longer defined by the condition that had once covered his body.

He was simply himself at last: safe, adored, and free to be the goofy, affectionate dog rescuers had glimpsed as soon as the pain began to fade.
