It’s not uncommon for suspects to turn themselves in, but this dog from Odessa was no ordinary offender. His crime? Being too irresistibly cute—and yes, he did turn himself in.
Meet Chico, a Shepsky—a mix of German Shepherd and Husky. At just a year old, he’s still very much a playful puppy at heart. His owner, Edward Alvarado, had hoped Chico would grow up to be an excellent guard dog, thanks to the protective nature of his German Shepherd side. But the lovable, sociable Husky traits took over.
Chico was simply too friendly, too eager to spread love, and way more interested in making friends than in guarding anything. Add a dash of curiosity, and you’ve got a dog who hates being bored. So, one night, Chico decided to take an impromptu adventure, slipping away from his dad’s watchful eye.
Chico’s Big Adventure and the Odessa Police Officers’ Fun Surprise
Around 3 AM, Chico casually strolled into the Odessa Police Department, about a mile from home. Like he was on a mission, he walked right up to the counter, stood on his hind legs, and placed his paws down—almost as if he was ready to report for duty.
The police officers were absolutely stunned. It’s not every day a dog just waltzes in like that! Of course, none of them spoke “dog,” so they assumed Chico was in need of help. But nope, Chico wasn’t stressed or scared. He was just there for a good time!
And that’s exactly what he got. The officers had a blast playing fetch with the goofy pup. But eventually, they knew they had to take action. They posted photos of Chico’s unexpected visit online, hoping his family would spot him.
Chico was wearing a collar, but his tags had clearly seen better days and looked like they’d recently broken off. With no other option, the officers called Animal Control to scan him for a microchip.
Worried that Animal Control might take him to a shelter, Chico decided to make a quick escape. The officers could only guess that the little adventurer had gotten himself even more lost in the process.
A Happy Ending for Chico, the Night Rider
Thankfully, this tale ends on a high note. Chico wasn’t lost anymore—he’d actually made his way home all on his own! It turns out he always knew exactly how to get back to his dad. When Alvarado woke up, there was Chico, acting like nothing ever happened.
This whole adventure might’ve stayed a mystery if Alvarado’s cousin hadn’t stumbled upon the photos of Chico online. The owner couldn’t believe his eyes—his mischievous pup was up to more than he’d ever imagined! Alvarado quickly called the police to let them know his furry friend was safe and sound at home. And with that, all was right in the world.
The officers happily added to their post, saying Chico was welcome back anytime he pleased.
This wild adventure could’ve had a sad ending, but luckily, Chico’s smarts saved the day. His owner is beyond relieved to know his pup knows exactly what to do if he ever gets lost again. Still, he’ll be doing everything he can to keep Chico from those late-night escapades.
We’ve got a feeling this won’t be the last we see of Chico, the night rider. We wouldn’t be surprised if he pops by the friendly officers again soon!
