When Lucie’s Animal Rescue received a call asking to surrender a dog, Lucie Holmes, the rescue’s founder, responded the way she always did.
“His owner asked me to take him because ‘he barked at other dogs and people when out,’ and she said he needed to go,” Holmes shared with The Dodo. “I asked a few questions, such as what training he had received to help him with these issues, and she replied, ‘He’s had none.’ I explained I was full but promised to reach out when I had room for him.”
A Family’s Short Time with Marcus
The dog had only been with his family for five weeks, and Holmes hoped they might find a way to resolve their challenges. Instead, she received a call that shook her to the core.
“Two and a half hours later, I got a call from a local vet, who told me the dog had been brought in to be euthanized,” Holmes said. “Thankfully, the vets refused. I called the owner again and told them I’d move things around to make space for him. There was no need for his life to end just because he needed time and training.”
A Fresh Start for Marcus
Despite having too many rescues to count, Holmes made room for the dog, Marcus, to save his life. When Marcus arrived at his new temporary home, he was understandably nervous. However, it didn’t take long for him to start soaking in all the love he had been missing out on.
“He came to us very scared and nervous, but within an hour, he was playing with the other dogs and my children, settling in beautifully,” Holmes said. “Five days in… and still no barking!”
The Journey to a Forever Home
It turns out all Marcus needed was a chance. Now, he has the opportunity to thrive truly.
“He’s currently under assessment, but we’ve already received numerous applications for him, and we hope to find him the perfect forever home,” Holmes said.
