A volunteer with R.A.D. Rescue was driving through Bakersfield, California, when she noticed a dog scavenging through trash by the side of the road. His face was unusually chubby, which at first seemed cute but odd — until the volunteer realized something was terribly wrong.
“His head was incredibly swollen from having a tight chain around his neck,” the volunteer wrote on TikTok.
Chunk’s Rescuing Moment
The sweet pit bull, soon to be called Chunk the Hunk, was clearly in distress. The volunteer didn’t hesitate — she got out of her car, lured him to safety with some chicken, and rushed him to the vet for a checkup.
Chunk sat calmly in the back of her car, his swollen head resting gently as he smiled up at her, hopeful that his pain was finally coming to an end.
A Long Road to Recovery
Even though Chunk was likely suffering, his spirits remained high. He seemed grateful to receive the care and attention he’d long been deprived of. Thankfully, the swelling in his head was treatable, and over time, his chubby head returned to a healthy size.
It became evident that Chunk had likely spent most of his life chained up, so his rescuers worked hard to teach him how to be a dog again. His personality began to shine as he adapted to new experiences and got into better shape, even when it was hard for him.
Chunk’s New Life: Waiting for Love
Chunk quickly became the sweetest, most well-behaved dog, who loved playing with other dogs and living life to the fullest.
Yet, despite all the love and attention he’s received since his rescue, the one thing he’s still missing is a forever home.
With any luck, Chunk won’t have to wait much longer to find the loving adopter he deserves.
