These loyal companions are often overlooked when families seek a new pet, and worse, many face the heartbreaking fate of being put down simply because they are different.
However, the story of one brave little pup, now known as Ariel, has a much happier ending, thanks to the kindness of those who saw her inner beauty despite her outward differences.
A Special Pup Finds Her Way to Safety
Greenacres Rescue shared the touching tale of Ariel, a female spaniel, who was found abandoned in a parking lot.
“She has been born with six legs and various other anomalies,” the rescue shared in the post.
Though her past remained a mystery, her future was about to take a hopeful turn. Determined to give Ariel the chance she deserved, the team at Greenacres took her to the vet for a thorough evaluation. They hoped to find a way to help this sweet pup live a healthy, normal life.
Mikey Lawlor from Greenacres Rescue shared with Western Telegraph that the name Ariel was inspired by someone who pointed out her resemblance to a mermaid—an imaginative and fitting tribute to her unique nature.
The rescue team was relieved when test results showed that, despite her physical challenges, Ariel was a happy and healthy dog. Her extra legs could be surgically removed, paving the way for her to lead the life every dog deserves.
“Ariel has two additional back legs and the beginnings of an additional vulva. Her pelvis hasn’t formed properly due to the extra hip joint. The plan will be to let her settle after her ordeal and reassess her in one month with the aim of removing the additional limbs and explore the function of her remaining leg,” the shelter shared.
Preparing for a Brighter Future
After her rescue, Ariel’s journey toward recovery began. She received plenty of rest, medical check-ups, and specialist consultations.
The team was committed to ensuring that every step of her treatment plan was in place before proceeding with surgery.
Months later, the big day arrived. Ariel underwent surgery to remove her additional limbs. The procedure was a success, and her resilience shone through immediately.
“Ariel is doing incredibly well,” said her surgeon, Aaron Lutchman with BBC. “She’s bounced back and is now a happy little dog, ready to enjoy life to the fullest.”
By the very next day, Ariel was already exploring her surroundings, proving her spirit was as strong as ever. She was placed with loving foster parents who provided her with the comfort and care she needed during her recovery.
Before long, Ariel had fully healed, and it was time for her to start a new chapter—finding her forever home.
The Perfect Family for a One-of-a-Kind Pup
As Ariel’s story spread, adoption applications poured into Greenacres Rescue. One family was remarkable.
They grieve the recent loss of their beloved dog, feel a connection to Ariel, and hope she can help fill the void in their hearts. They knew she was the one.
“Ariel is already loved by so many and has been on quite a journey. Raised by a special lady called June, who has worked wonders in her care for her, Ariel is a beautiful, vibrant and gentle soul who is already bringing so much joy in our lives,” Emma-Mary Webster shared in a Facebook post.
Ariel’s journey from abandonment to becoming a beloved family member is a reminder of the power of compassion and love.
So many people came together to give this little pup the life she deserves, proving that no dog should ever be discarded just for being different.
