Even though it may not seem like it, being a pup is no easy job.
This is especially true for those dogs who are less fortunate. Some of them are forced to face the harshness of the cold streets, while others are taken to busy, stressful shelters.
And while the shelter staff does everything they can to make the pups feel at ease, the environment can be overwhelming. The loud noises and chaotic surroundings often leave the animals feeling anxious, and in some cases, they develop depression.
That’s exactly what’s happening to Rascal.
Struggling to Find His Place
Rascal’s journey has been anything but easy. After being abandoned by an Orange County rescue at a boarding facility in Rowland Heights, California, he’s been facing some tough times.
For the last two years, he has been living in a kennel, hoping for the day a kind family would finally notice him. Sadly, that day never came.
With limited options, the shelter planned to send Rascal to a local shelter, where his future was uncertain.
But then, Samantha Redline, founder of Kennel Eviction Rescue (KER), a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing neglected animals, stepped in. She welcomed Rascal into the organization and began working tirelessly to find him a forever home.
A Glimpse of Hope, Then Heartbreak
After just a couple of days, a woman took notice of Rascal and began working with him. They even had home introductions with a professional trainer.
“Everything seemed to be going well at first. She followed a crate training schedule and even bought him a flirt pole to help burn off some energy,” Redline said in an interview.
It seemed like the perfect fit. The woman took Rascal for a hike, and they spent an entire day together. But soon after, Rascal’s world came crashing down. KER received a message from the adopter saying she simply didn’t have time for him.
“It all surprised us. Rascal settles better than any of our other dogs, and he loves sitting with you. He’s playful and enjoys chasing toys, especially on the flirt pole, though he’s less interested in toys by themselves. He’s an excellent hiking partner and walks well. He’s a great companion overall,” she shared.
Ever since Rascal was returned to the shelter, he hasn’t been able to shake off his feelings of disappointment. On his first day back, he paced around his kennel as if waiting for someone to come and take him home.
He even started barking, something he had never done before.
Desperate to help Rascal find a forever home, the shelter shared his story on their TikTok page.
“Rascal needs a home, preferably with no other animals or just caged animals like reptiles or bunnies. He does well with both men and women, but he needs someone with patience. He’s 6 years old, so he’s not super active, but he still loves playtime and daily walks,” they explained.
