Shelter workers encounter many animals, but some leave an unforgettable mark.
Matilda, a bright-eyed, tiny puppy, was one such dog who stole hearts from the moment she stepped into the Douglas County Animal Shelter. Her joyful and anxious nature puzzled the staff, but they quickly realized she was different.
From the moment Matilda arrived, she was adopted almost immediately, a surprising outcome considering the tough early days of her life.
A Rough Start in Life
At just two months old, Matilda was found on the streets of Georgia, struggling with irritated skin and a worm infection.
Despite her rough start, the little pup’s spirit never wavered. She remained cheerful, wagging her tail constantly, capturing the attention of everyone around her.
A volunteer, Santina Sanders, told The Dodo, “Matilda gives the sweetest kisses.” She added, “There was just something about her—she was truly special.” Matilda’s gentle nature and her bond with other animals were impossible to overlook.
A Special Rescue
Peebles and More Animal Rescue soon became involved with Matilda. One of their directors, Teresa Bulls Ciofalo, felt a deep connection with the bubbly puppy.
Ciofalo couldn’t resist rescuing Matilda and placing her with a foster family, knowing the dog deserved nothing less than love and care.
A Forever Home Filled with Joy
When her new family came to take her home, Matilda’s joy was contagious. She wagged her tail the entire hour-and-a-half car ride, and her excitement never faltered.
In fact, her tail wagging was so energetic that it caused her to walk with a slight wiggle—something everyone adored about her.
Though she enjoyed every part of her new life, Matilda wasn’t too keen on collars. Her new dad, Rich, noticed the moment he tried to put one on her she stopped wagging, making it clear she wasn’t a fan.
Other than that, this joyful pup thrived in her new home. She cherished playing with her furry siblings, helping her human brother with school, and relishing in her newfound happiness.
