The morning was quiet, just like many others on the remote farm where Soner Büyümez worked.
A veterinarian by profession, he had come to this countryside in Turkey for routine work. But that day, something unexpected pulled him away from his tasks.
From somewhere far off in the open field, a faint cry reached his ears. It wasn’t loud, but it carried something urgent. It sounded like someone, or something, was begging for help.
A Cry in the Distance Changed Everything
Trusting his instinct, Soner began walking toward the noise.
He crossed patches of grass, uneven ground, and loose soil until he finally saw what was causing the sound. In the middle of a small landslide area, he spotted a dog’s head poking out from the earth. Her body was buried entirely beneath the soil.
Only her frightened eyes and nose were visible. She wasn’t barking or moving much. She just stared, frozen and helpless.
For a few seconds, Soner stood still. The sight was painful. The dog had likely been trapped for hours, maybe longer. Her face looked tired, but she wasn’t giving up.
He knew he couldn’t walk away. With no time to waste, he ran to get a shovel and rushed back to help her. The soil was heavy and dense, but he began digging immediately.
She Wasn’t Just Fighting for Herself
As Soner dug around her carefully, the dog began to tremble. She let out small whimpers, not of fear, but of something deeper.

Bit by bit, the earth gave way, and soon the first puppy appeared. Covered in dirt but still alive, the little one let out a faint squeal.
Encouraged by this, Soner kept going. In total, he uncovered seven puppies, all of them alive. It was hard to believe. The burrow they had been hiding in must have collapsed during the landslide.
Without their mother staying close and the lucky timing of Soner’s arrival, their story could have ended differently.

Once the puppies were placed near their mother, she immediately began licking them, checking every inch as if counting heads.
Her tail wagged gently, and for the first time, she seemed to relax. She didn’t need to be rescued anymore. Her family was whole again.
Despite the terrifying experience, the pups were in surprisingly good shape. None of them appeared to be injured, and they clung to their mother, finding comfort in her warmth.
Soner stayed with them, making sure they were clean and fed. He gave the mother water and checked her health.
As he watched them settle down together, he realized she had likely been living on her own for some time. There was no collar, no signs of anyone looking for her.
Life as a stray is full of risks, and it was clear she had been doing her best to survive. Still, she had found a way to keep her puppies safe, even when the ground turned against her.

That day, Soner didn’t just save lives. He made a promise. He brought the mother and her seven babies with him. They were given a warm place to rest, fresh food, and a chance to heal.
“They are doing well,” he later said. “I’ll raise them like they are my own.” There was no hesitation in his voice. It wasn’t just a good deed. It was something deeper.
