Eden has always been a soft and gentle soul. When she was living under a tree as a stray dog, kind-hearted strangers would stop by, leaving food for her. She’d respond with a small wag of her tail, acknowledging their kindness.
Now, while she waits for her forever home at an animal hospital, Eden reaches her paw through the bars of her cage to hold hands with everyone who walks by.
A Life Under the Tree
Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy dog rescue, isn’t sure why Eden chose to live under that tree in Southern California. However, when Suzette arrived to help her, it was clear that Eden had been there for quite some time.
“For weeks and weeks, she was under that tree,” Hall shared with The Dodo. “She wouldn’t leave.”
Although people visited Eden and left food for her, no one stepped in to help. So, when Hall learned about Eden’s plight, she immediately took action.
Eden perked up when she saw Hall.
“She knew she was getting help,” Hall said. “She knew it was her time to stop living under the tree.”
Hall took Eden to the vet, where her new friends gave her a much-needed bath. They discovered that Eden had a painful skin condition and was severely underweight. Treatment began right away, and slowly, her true personality started to shine.
“She is the sweetest dog you could ever meet,” Hall said. “She’s just a lover.”
Eden was placed in her kennel to rest and recover. Initially, she spent most of her time curled up on her bed. But one day, as someone passed by her kennel, they noticed a single grey and white paw reaching through the bars.
The person gently grabbed Eden’s paw and gave it a loving squeeze.
“She just wants to hold our hand,” Hall said. “She’ll hold your hand and then make the sweetest howl ever as if she’s saying, ‘I love you.’”
Since that moment, Eden has been reaching out to everyone who passes by her kennel, offering her paw for handshakes. While she has received many gestures of kindness, the sweet pup is still waiting for that one special connection.
Looking for a Forever Home
“We’re working on getting her into a forever home,” Hall said. “She deserves it more than anybody.”
Eden isn’t always comfortable around other dogs, likely due to the time she spends living on her own. However, with the help of the vet team, she’s slowly building confidence through walks with dog trainers. Still, it will take time, and Hall is hoping to find a home where Eden can be the only dog.
Though it’s taking longer than expected to find Eden the right home, Hall knows it’s only a matter of time before the perfect family falls in love with her.
“Everyone falls in love with her,” Hall said. “She’s just a cuddler and a total sweetheart.”
For now, Eden continues to spread love at the animal hospital, one handshake at a time. Some might think she’s simply asking for attention, but Hall believes she’s saying something deeper.
“It’s like she’s telling everybody, ‘Thank you,’” Hall said. “‘Thank you for noticing me.’”
