One Woman’s Sanctuary Is Changing the Lives of Hundreds of Disabled Dogs

For the last several years, Buket Özgünlü has poured her heart into giving abandoned dogs a second chance at life.

Through her nonprofit, Paws Holding on to Life Association, she has dedicated herself to rescuing pups who might otherwise be forgotten.

Situated in the Turkish countryside, her sanctuary is home to more than 500 dogs, many of whom face challenges that make surviving on the streets nearly impossible.

Saving Lives One Paw at a Time

Most of the dogs Özgünlü cares for carry heavy burdens from their past. Some were injured, left unable to walk, or mistreated by humans who abandoned them.

Others arrived after suffering cruel acts that no animal should endure. Yet under her watchful eye, each dog finds safety, food, medical care, and, most importantly, love.

“I focus especially on dogs with physical challenges,” Özgünlü shared. “They need extra care, patience, and attention. I know firsthand how essential support can be, so I make sure they have everything they require to live comfortably.”

For Özgünlü, this work is more than just rescuing animals; it’s a personal mission.

Inspired by her own experiences caring for a disabled family member, she brings a deep empathy to her daily efforts, ensuring every dog feels seen and valued. In her hands, their past pain begins to fade, replaced with security and warmth.

Adventures on Wheels

Life at the sanctuary is far from ordinary.

The dogs have plenty of space to roam and play, many with specially designed wheelchairs that allow them freedom and mobility despite their injuries.

Yet Özgünlü wanted to give them more than just safety — she wanted them to experience the joy of adventure.

That desire led to the creation of the sanctuary’s most unusual and delightful project: a “dog train.”

Using barrels mounted on wheels and connected in a line, she crafted a miniature train that allows her dogs to explore the world beyond their usual boundaries.

For the first time, the pups could ride together, feeling the breeze on their faces and taking in new sights and sounds.

The sight of the dogs moving together, their eyes bright and tails wagging, is a testament to their resilience and capacity for happiness.

“I had dreamed of this for a long time,” Özgünlü said. “To see it finally come to life, and to witness how much joy it brings them, is indescribable.”

Each ride becomes a celebration of life — a small but powerful way for the dogs to feel included, free, and spirited. It is a moment of pure happiness, shared between the animals and the woman who refuses to give up on them.

A Journey of Hearts

The dog train doesn’t just delight the dogs; it also warms the hearts of everyone who sees it. As the colorful barrels roll down village streets, passersby can’t help but smile, wave, and cheer.

People who might otherwise never have considered the lives of rescued dogs suddenly find themselves touched by their journey.

For Özgünlü, those reactions are a quiet affirmation of her work. While caring for so many animals is often exhausting and thankless, seeing their happiness makes every long day worthwhile.

Each wagging tail, playful glance, and soft nuzzle reminds her that every act of compassion matters.

“These dogs have known suffering,” she said. “They understand pain and loss. But when they are happy, when they feel loved, it’s more powerful than anything else. It’s their joy that keeps me going.”

The dogs of Paws Holding on to Life Association are no longer invisible. Through Özgünlü’s tireless dedication, they are now celebrated, cherished, and recognized for the beautiful spirits they are.

Her sanctuary is more than a refuge — it is a home where every life, no matter how broken, has the chance to thrive.

In the end, Özgünlü’s story is one of hope, perseverance, and unwavering love. She proves that with patience, creativity, and heart, even the most vulnerable souls can experience happiness, adventure, and the gentle reassurance that they truly belong.
