Amid the chaos and devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Tennessee, a search and rescue team made a touching discovery that brought hope to a shattered community.
As days went by following the deadly storm and the flooding that ensued, rescuers from the Kingsport Fire Department and Murfreesboro Police Department uncovered an incredible story of survival near the Nolichucky River.
While combing the damaged riverbanks, the crew spotted an unexpected sight — a solitary canine stranded about 20 feet in the air.
A Heroic Rescue
The Kingsport Fire Department shared the moment on social media, stating, “[She was] stranded around 20 feet up.”
It appeared the pup had been swept away by the rushing floodwaters during the hurricane, carried along on a makeshift raft of debris.
That debris eventually lodged itself in a tree, and as the water receded, the dog found herself trapped high above the ground with no way to climb down.
Safe at Last
Thankfully, rescuers had arrived just in time.
Using a ladder, the crew managed to reach the trapped canine and gently bring her down to safety.
“After retrieving the dog, who was happily removed from the tree, rescuers were able to feed her,” the team shared.
Despite her harrowing ordeal, the dog appeared to be in good health, much to the relief of her rescuers.
A Joyful Reunion
The dog, named Athena, posed joyfully with the search and rescue crew after they brought her to safety.
Once she was fed and cared for, Athena was taken to a local animal shelter, where she would remain until her family could be located.
Thanks to a report from local news station WCYB, shared by the fire department, Athena’s story came full circle.
She was soon reunited with her family, bringing a heartwarming end to an incredible tale of survival.
Her journey became a beacon of hope for the community, offering a ray of light amid the challenges they faced in the aftermath of the hurricane.
