On the morning of October 31st, a quiet street in El Monte, California, became the scene of a heartbreaking surprise.
Gloria and Guillermo Reyes were walking near their home when something unusual caught their eyes — a cardboard box wrapped tightly in black plastic, sitting alone at the curb.
At first glance, it looked like trash, yet there was a subtle movement that made them pause.
A Chilling Halloween Discovery
Curious and concerned, the couple approached the box. A faint sound and a tiny snout poking through the cardboard confirmed their worst fear: a helpless puppy was trapped inside.

From the moment he arrived, it was evident that the puppy, now named Dexter, had endured more than anyone could bear to imagine. He appeared lethargic, his energy sapped after at least a full day trapped inside the box.
The concern wasn’t just exhaustion — oxygen deprivation inside the confined space could have caused serious damage.
However, the vet soon discovered an additional danger: Dexter was battling parvovirus, a potentially deadly illness that attacks a dog’s intestines.
Without swift treatment, the virus can be fatal, particularly in such a young pup.
Despite his fragile state, Dexter showed glimmers of hope, giving gentle tail wags and soft kisses to anyone who approached him.
“Even though he’s weak, you can sense the personality of a loving, loyal dog waiting to shine through,” Wood shared. Yet, the puppy’s early days had been grim.
Wood suspects that Dexter came from a backyard breeder who abandoned him as soon as he became sick — a sad but familiar pattern in cases of puppy neglect.
A Brighter Future Ahead
While Dexter’s introduction to the world was tragic, the story doesn’t end in despair. Hand in Paw has taken over his care, ensuring he receives round-the-clock treatment and attention.
Each day brings small signs of recovery: a stronger tail wag, brighter eyes, and a growing trust in the humans who saved him.
Wood is optimistic about Dexter’s future. “He may have had a rough start, but he’s on the path to a wonderful life,” she said.
Plans are already underway to find him a permanent home where he will be cherished and loved.
