Zuly Ventura Vasquez was one of those people.
She joined other independent rescuers and searched the streets for homeless pups before the cold became even more dangerous.

The mother was later named Leia.
Her puppy was named Luke.
Until that rescue, Leia had been Luke’s only protection, his only warmth, and his only provider on the streets.

One group in Colorado, Up Pup and Away, was especially affected.
After seeing the photo, they offered to help transfer Leia and Luke from Texas to Colorado so they could get a real fresh start.
Before the trip, Leia received heartworm treatment through Houston K-911 Rescue.
It was another hurdle in a life that had already been brutally hard.
Still, she kept pushing forward.
Soon, Leia and Luke headed to Colorado.
The trip marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.
By that point, Luke was old enough to be independent from his mother.
So when they arrived, the two were placed in separate foster homes.
That separation was bittersweet.
But it also meant Leia had done exactly what she had fought so hard to do.
Her puppy had made it.
