Saving a stray dog is always a truly noble act. When you think about it, you’re changing that dog’s entire life.
Thanks to you, this dog will now have the chance to live a life full of happiness and security, never needing to worry about food or shelter again.
It’s easy to overlook how much this means because it may not seem like a big deal to us, but to a dog, it’s everything—and that’s what truly matters.
When Rachel Hague volunteered, she had helped many dogs, but everything changed when she met a pup who really needed her help.
A Dog in Need of Care
Rachel was helping another dog when this worried pup approached her.
She shared with GeoBeats Animals: “I was on a different case helping with a dog that had been injured and trying to help trap him… and Ellie came running up to my truck.“
Rachel realized that this pup was more than comfortable reaching out to humans and she looked so friendly.
The dog, now named Ellie, was dirty, had fleas, and was a bit malnourished. Rachel knew she needed help, so she took Ellie to a clinic in Texas.
On the way, Ellie fell asleep, taking a peaceful nap. This showed that she felt safe and secure in Rachel’s care.
Ellie Becomes a Mother
When Ellie arrived at the clinic, veterinarians carefully examined her and made an important discovery.
Ellie was pregnant and about to give birth, which explained why she was so eager to find help. The vets confirmed that Ellie and her puppies were all in good health.
She shared: “My soul puppy had just passed away right before that at 19 years old. So, I had zero dogs at the time. I went from zero dogs to very quickly having Ellie and all of her babies.“
After being discharged from the clinic, Rachel brought Ellie and her puppies home to Texas. Ellie was an attentive mother, spending every moment caring for her babies.
She also seemed completely at ease with Rachel taking care of her puppies. The trust she had in Rachel was extraordinary.
Ellie allowed Rachel to pick up and hold her puppies while keeping a watchful eye on them like any loving mom would.
A Happy Family
Rachel often wondered about Ellie’s past. Maybe she was abandoned because of her pregnancy, or perhaps her owner couldn’t care for her anymore.
Regardless, Rachel was grateful to care for such a sweet dog. As the puppies grew, it was time for their vaccinations.
When the time came, almost all of the puppies were placed on an adoption list and quickly found their forever homes. Rachel was overjoyed for them.
As for Ellie, things took a different turn. She said:
“Once we had Ellie around the house, I just knew that she was mine.”
However, one puppy remained—Bear. Rachel decided to keep her too because she always seemed happiest with her mom, even more than with the other puppies.
It’s comforting to know that Bear, just like her mom, was so happy with Rachel. And now, they’re all living their best lives together.
