In a quiet home in Mexico, a pit bull named Greka is learning how to grieve.
She lives with her mom, Delvia González, but her heart still aches for someone else—her beloved grandma.
Greka has always been a friendly soul, full of joy and eager to play with everyone she meets. But one person stood out among them all.
A Bond Beyond Pet Sitting
Each day when González left for work, she would leave Greka in the care of her 70-year-old mother, also named Delvia. Over time, their connection grew into something beautiful. They became inseparable.
“They were always together,” González recalled. “They’d play fetch until they were tired, then curl up to watch TV.”
A Constant Companion in Good and Bad Times
But Greka offered more than just fun. She became a source of comfort during difficult times.
González’s mother had diabetes and struggled with poor vision. Greka instinctively knew when something was wrong, often alerting the family if her grandmother’s blood sugar changed. She never left her side, resting faithfully at her feet.
Saying Goodbye to a Loved One
The loyal dog never left her grandmother’s side, staying close even during her final moments. A few weeks ago, Delvia was taken to the hospital. Sadly, she didn’t make it back home.
“Greka was the first to rush into the emergency room,” González shared. “She was anxious and clearly worried. We knew she needed closure, so on the day of the funeral, we brought her along to say goodbye. We let her stand beside the coffin. She cried, and her whole body trembled. But she seemed to understand that her grandmother was finally at peace.”
Though Delvia is no longer here, her memory lives on in a way that brings both sorrow and comfort. González placed a framed photograph of her mother in their home. Greka spends hours sitting in front of it.
“She’s grieving,” González said. “She brings her ball to the picture and waits. It’s like she’s hoping her grandmother will play with her again.”
Finding Comfort in Each Other
In comforting her dog, González finds comfort herself. Greka’s love for her grandmother keeps her memory alive.
“I feel my mom’s presence every time Greka curls up next to me or drops her ball at my feet,” she said. “That love has helped us get through the sorrow together.”
Recently, on a visit to the beach, González felt a quiet reassurance that her mother was still with them in spirit.
Even after loss, the love between a dog and her person doesn’t fade. Greka’s eyes still reflect the unbreakable bond they shared.
“They were more than friends,” González said. “They were everything to each other.”
