Poleng Looked Like He Had Turned to Stone, but a Tender Heart Was Waiting Underneath

Abandoned in Indonesia and suffering from one of the worst cases of mange his rescuers had ever seen, Poleng survived thanks to a caring family, a determined rescue team, and the people who followed his journey all the way home.

When Poleng was abandoned on the streets of Indonesia, he was in desperate need of help.

He somehow made his way into a nearby community, where one kind family noticed him and refused to look away.

They started feeding him and looking after him as best they could.

Even with that support, it was obvious Poleng needed far more care than they were able to provide on their own.

Around that same time, a team member from Little Steps Matter was nearby helping another dog.

Seeing a chance to save him, the family approached the rescuer and asked if they could please help Poleng too.

The moment the team saw him, they were shocked by how severe his condition was.

“The moment we saw Poleng, it was clear he had suffered tremendously,” Little Steps Matter wrote on Instagram.

“His body was ravaged by severe mange, with painfully inflamed skin and thick crusted layers covering him so heavily it almost looked as though he had turned to stone.”

The rescuers had never seen such a bad case of mange.

They knew immediately that he needed urgent veterinary care and rushed him to the vet for intensive treatment.

At that point, it seemed likely that Poleng’s recovery would be long and difficult.

His skin was painfully inflamed, and the heavy crusting showed just how much he had endured before anyone was able to step in.

It was hard to imagine how uncomfortable he must have been every single day.

Yet once he was safe, his story began to change faster than anyone expected.

The medical care started working, and little by little the thick scraps covering his body began to fall away.

As the layers loosened, healing skin appeared underneath, and the dog hidden beneath all that suffering slowly started to reemerge.

The transformation was dramatic, but it did not happen only on the outside.

His trust began returning too.

After only two weeks, Poleng already looked like a completely different dog.

For a case that had seemed so overwhelming at first, that early progress gave everyone around him a reason to hope.

His rescuers could finally begin to picture the life he might have once he was no longer trapped in constant pain.

“After all the scraps had fallen off and his skin was healing, he allowed us to touch him,” Sabine Kaufmann, founder of Little Steps Matter, told The Dodo.

That small moment said everything.

A dog who had once been hurting too badly to welcome contact was finally able to accept gentle hands.

As his body healed, Poleng began accepting the cuddles he could not tolerate before.

The rescue team got to see the sweetness that had been there all along, buried beneath pain, stress, and fear.

Despite everything he had been through, he turned out to be deeply loving.

He was not defined by the condition he arrived in.

Instead, Poleng started revealing a soft and affectionate personality that had simply been impossible to see when he was suffering so badly.

Every improvement seemed to uncover more of who he really was.

The dog who had shocked everyone at intake was becoming one of those rescue stories that no one on the team would ever forget.

After making significant progress, Poleng went back to the family who had first helped him.

That return mattered because they had been the first people to notice his suffering and try to keep him going.

Their food, concern, and willingness to ask for help had given him a bridge from abandonment to rescue.

Without that kindness, he might never have made it to treatment at all.

Unfortunately, they were not able to keep him long-term.

So Little Steps Matter stepped in again to make sure his recovery could continue.

They found him a foster home where he could stay safe, keep healing, and settle into a more stable routine.

By then, Poleng was no longer just surviving.

In foster care, he truly began to thrive.

Freed from the worst of his pain, he had more space to show his real personality day by day.

His rescuers saw a dog who was sweet, goofy, funny, and eager for affection.

That contrast made his journey even more remarkable.

He had arrived as the worst case of mange the team had ever seen, yet underneath that suffering was a bright, joyful dog waiting for a chance.

As weeks passed, more people began following his recovery through Little Steps Matter’s social media pages.

His story was difficult to forget because the change was so visible and so emotional.

People were not only watching a sick dog get better.

They were watching Poleng discover comfort, trust, and happiness.

Four months after his rescue, the next big turning point finally came.

Poleng’s forever family found him after following his journey online and falling in love with him along the way.

By the time they were ready to bring him home, they already knew exactly who he was.

They had seen the pain he survived, the healing he fought through, and the sweet nature that emerged once he felt safe.

That made their decision simple.

They could not wait to give him the loving home he deserved.

For Poleng, adoption was not just the end of a rescue case.

It was the beginning of the life everyone had hoped he would one day get to live.

According to Kaufmann, that life has turned out beautifully.

“He’s living a dream life with his family now,” Kaufmann said.

“They adore him so much.”

“He was really the worst case we ever saw. And then he turned out to be the most goofy, funny, sweetest boy.”

That description feels especially powerful because it captures both halves of Poleng’s story.

He was a dog in terrible condition, abandoned and suffering in a way that stunned even experienced rescuers.

He was also a dog whose tenderness survived everything.

From the moment a family in the community fed him, to the moment Little Steps Matter rushed him to the vet, to the day his adoptive family welcomed him home, Poleng’s life changed because people kept saying yes to helping him.

One family gave him his first chance.

A rescue gave him medical care and safety.

A foster home gave him room to keep growing stronger.

And a forever family gave him the happy ending he had fought so hard to reach.

Today, Poleng’s story stands as a reminder that some of the most heartbreaking rescue cases can still lead to the most joyful outcomes.

It also shows how many different people can play a role in saving one dog’s life.
