Katie Boada almost dismissed the voicemail as a scam, but it turned out her missing dog, Sparkles, had really been found and was finally coming home.
In February, Katie Boada got a voicemail at work that sounded impossible.
The caller said her dog, Sparkles, had been found.
Sparkles was the Pomeranian who had gone missing back in 2014.
Boada’s first reaction was not excitement.
It was suspicion.
“I thought it was fraud,” she told The Dodo.
But the message was real.
A woman had found Sparkles wandering the streets of Broward County, Florida.
The dog was 17 years old by then, and the woman who found her did not want to risk taking a senior pup somewhere unsafe.
After looking into no-kill shelters in the area, she brought Sparkles to Abandoned Pet Rescue in Fort Lauderdale.
“She knew senior dogs are very high-risk of being put down at other places,” the shelter’s executive director, Kara Starzyk, told The Dodo.
“She wanted to make sure she’d be going somewhere safe.”
Once Sparkles arrived, the shelter staff scanned her for a microchip.
They found one.
That tiny chip led Starzyk to the microchip company, which helped her track down Boada.
Then came the question that hangs over any reunion after so many years.
Would Boada want her dog back?
“You never know where somebody’s life is going to be after that long of a time,” Starzyk said.
“Are they in a place to take the dog back? It’s hard to know.”
Boada did not need time to think.
Her answer was yes.
“I was heartbroken when she went missing, and I’ve been heartbroken ever since,” Boada said.
“I’ve longed for this day.”
“She was coming home.”
For Boada, Sparkles had never really left her thoughts.
Even after all those years, she still carried the little dog in the back of her mind.
Sparkles had been part of Boada’s family for five years before she vanished.
Boada remembered her as smart and energetic.
She loved showing off tricks.
She also liked lounging on a chair outside and watching people pass by.
When Sparkles disappeared, Boada did everything she could think to do.
She reported her missing to the microchip company.
She also alerted her veterinarian.
She searched the neighborhood and posted flyers, hoping someone would spot her.
Still, Sparkles was gone.
Boada believes the dog was taken from her yard.
What makes the story even more striking is where Sparkles turned up.
She was found in Miramar, Florida.
That is the same place where she had lived with Boada and her family 12 years earlier.
By the time Sparkles was recovered, Boada was living in Miami.
The shelter was about 45 minutes away.
Because she was at work when Starzyk called, she could not immediately leave to get there herself.
So she sent her daughter, Katelyn, to pick Sparkles up.
Katelyn had been 12 years old when the dog first went missing.
Now she was part of bringing her back.
The reunion at the shelter was emotional for everyone involved.
“It was a really special moment,” Starzyk said.
“You can easily see that this family was loving and compassionate.”
“It was a huge relief to know that she’s going to be well cared for.”
The most amazing part came when Sparkles saw Boada again.
There was no sign that 12 years had passed between them.
Boada said Sparkles seemed immediately at ease.
“When she saw me, it was like she felt comfortable,” Boada said.
“You could tell she wasn’t hesitant; she wasn’t nervous.”
“She picked up right where we left off.”
That instant comfort meant everything.
After so much time, Boada had to wonder what Sparkles had been through.
But in the middle of all those unknowns, the dog still recognized home.
The joy of getting Sparkles back, though, came with heartbreak too.
She was in rough condition.
She was malnourished.
Her teeth were in poor shape.
She also had severe cataracts.
For Boada, it was painfully obvious that Sparkles had not been getting the care she needed.
“It was to the point that it was more than visible that she never went to the vet,” Boada said.
A veterinary checkup brought even harder news.
Sparkles had anemia.
She also had Stage 3 kidney failure.
At 17, she was an elderly dog with major medical needs.
Boada did not hesitate there either.
She committed to caring for Sparkles exactly as she was.
Every day now, Boada gives Sparkles IV fluids.
She also gives her iron supplements.
The routine is demanding, but Boada does not mind.
“When I took her in, I took the bad and the good,” she said.
“All I want to do is to be able to give her love because you could tell that she was not loved where she was at.”
That love is already making a difference.
At a recent vet visit, Sparkles’ kidneys were doing better.
Boada knows the improvement does not erase Sparkles’ age.
She also knows their time together may be limited.
Still, that does not change what she wants to give her now.
“I’m going to give it my all to keep her as comfortable as I can,” Boada said.
It is a simple promise, but a powerful one.
After 12 years of wondering where Sparkles was, Boada finally has the chance to make the dog feel safe again.
That chance means medicine, patience, and daily care.
It also means tenderness.
These days, Sparkles gets to enjoy the ordinary moments that once seemed impossible.
She goes on trips to the store.
She cuddles on the couch with Boada.
She follows her from place to place.
For a dog who spent years away from the family who loved her, that kind of closeness matters.
For Boada, it matters too.
“We had a special bond before, and I think we have a special bond now,” she said.
“She brings me so much happiness.”
There is something especially moving about the way this story came together.
A stranger noticed an elderly dog wandering alone and chose to help.
She thought carefully about where to bring her.
The rescue staff checked for a microchip instead of assuming no one was looking.
And when the call finally reached Boada, she was ready.
After all that time, Sparkles was still wanted.
She was still loved.
She was still family.
Stories about lost dogs do not always get endings like this.
Twelve years is long enough for people to assume a reunion will never happen.
It is long enough for hope to fade in the eyes of almost everyone else.
But Boada never fully let go.
Sparkles remained part of her heart, even in absence.
Now that absence has been replaced with daily life again.
There are vet appointments.
There are treatments.
There are quiet hours together on the couch.
There is also relief.
No one can give Sparkles back the years she lost.
No one can undo the neglect reflected in her condition.
But Boada can give her comfort now.
She can give her stability.
She can give her the kind of care every senior dog deserves.
That is what Sparkles has finally come home to.
Not a perfect ending, but a loving one.
After 12 years apart, she is back with the person who never stopped longing for her.
And for Boada, that is enough to make every day with Sparkles feel like a gift.
