Rescued from the meat trade and missing part of her body, a gentle husky named Cora is showing everyone around her what hope really looks like.
When Cora was pulled from a slaughterhouse and rescued from the meat trade in China, her body already showed just how much she had endured.
She was in rough shape when she was brought to Harbin SHS Animal Rescue, but for the first time in a long time, she was finally safe.
That first stop mattered, because it gave Cora the chance to rest, relax, and begin again after unimaginable suffering.
Soon after, her journey continued all the way to the UK, where 8 Below Husky Rescue took her in.
Cora is 7 years old, and the marks of her past are impossible to miss.
She is missing one full ear and part of the other, and she is also missing part of one of her front legs.
To most people, those losses are the first thing they see when they look at her.
But the people who know Cora best have learned that she does not seem especially interested in what is missing.
In many ways, it was not until she reached 8 Below Husky Rescue that her life truly began.

According to her rescuers, Cora genuinely does not seem to think of herself as limited.
“Cora genuinely doesn’t seem to be aware that she has a disability,” Jade Hayley Brightmore of 8 Below Husky Rescue told The Dodo.
“She doesn’t look at herself as being different or limited.”
Instead, Brightmore said, Cora wants the same simple things so many happy dogs want.
“She wants to get out for her walks, explore, enjoy life, be loved and, most importantly, have her belly rubbed!”
That outlook may be the most moving part of her story.
After everything humans put her through, Cora is still full of affection.
She seeks out love constantly, leaning toward kindness instead of shrinking away from it.
There is something especially powerful about that, because her past would have given her every reason not to trust.
Yet Cora is not holding grudges against the world.
She seems rooted in the present, focused less on what happened to her and more on what might come next.

“We obviously have to be aware of her physical limitations for her and make sure we don’t allow her enthusiasm to exceed what her body can currently manage,” Brightmore said.
“But Cora herself certainly doesn’t seem to think there is anything she can’t do.”

It shows up when she heads out for a walk, eager to explore whatever is ahead.
It shows up when she seeks affection, as if love is the most natural thing in the world.

“Humans see what she’s lost and think about everything she must have endured,” Brightmore said.
“Cora seems far more interested in what life has to offer her next.”
It is hard not to be moved by that perspective.
The people around her cannot help imagining the pain behind her injuries.
They cannot help thinking about what she was forced to survive before rescue changed everything.
But Cora does not appear to spend her days reliving the worst parts of her past.
She seems much more interested in the next walk, the next cuddle, and the next chance to enjoy being loved.
That is why her second chance feels so meaningful to everyone who meets her.
