Ashlyn, a senior dog in a North Carolina shelter, faced a tough battle. She had lost weight and suffered from malignant sarcomas under her skin.
Despite her condition, the New England Humane Society (NEHS) found her a loving home where she could spend her remaining days surrounded by care. However, getting her there required a special effort.
Paul Steklenski, founder of Flying Fur Animal Rescue (FFAR), stepped in to help. He flew Ashlyn over 450 miles, giving her the chance to experience love and comfort in her last days.
A Flight Filled with Emotion
During the flight, Paul felt deeply moved with Ashlyn by his side, knowing this might be her final journey.
While he’s accustomed to transporting dogs monthly to help them find homes, senior dogs like Ashlyn hold a special place in his heart. “These are the ones where you really focus on what they’re going through,” he shared.
Initially, Ashlyn seemed a bit distant, but as they traveled, she began to warm up, even reaching out her paw and resting her head on Paul’s lap. To him, these simple gestures were everything, the true reward of his mission.
A New Beginning with a Loving Family
Ashlyn was welcomed by Tracy Lander, an experienced foster caregiver for the NEHS, who was touched by Ashlyn’s fragile state.
Under Tracy’s care, Ashlyn started to regain strength, eating heartily and connecting with Tracy’s other dogs. Ashlyn formed a special bond with Angel, one of Tracy’s dogs, and even received affectionate licks from Xander, her boxer mix.
With each passing day, Ashlyn showed resilience and joy. As Tracy reflected, “She understands she is loved.” Thanks to Paul’s selfless act, Ashlyn transformed from a lonely shelter dog to a beloved family member, inspiring everyone around her to appreciate each precious moment.
“I never imagined finding something so fulfilling,” Paul said, “that it would eclipse almost everything else in my life.”
