Foster Mom Rescues Starving Pup, Discovers He’s Her Soulmate

On what seemed like an ordinary school day, a man driving his child to school made a heartbreaking discovery.

On the side of the road, he spotted a frail and severely emaciated pup lying helplessly, pleading silently for someone to help him.

The man’s heart sank, and without hesitation, he stopped the car, rushed to the dog’s side, and gently scooped him up. Unsure of what else to do, he took Sugar Snap to the nearest Chicago police station.

A Journey to Healing

The police officers at the station immediately recognized the severity of the situation. They swiftly contacted the local animal shelter, explaining the dire condition of Sugar Snap. Upon receiving instructions to bring the pup into the care of Chicago Animal Care and Control. The officers carefully placed him in their vehicle and drove him to the shelter, hoping that this would be the first step in his recovery.

Upon arrival, the medical team at the shelter assessed Sugar Snap and realized that his condition required specialized care. They quickly made arrangements to transfer him to Chicago Animal Rescue, One Tail at a Time, where he could receive the focused attention he needed.

The staff at the rescue wasted no time and conducted a thorough examination; discovering that Sugar Snap was too weak to walk or even stand on his own. Yet, despite his frailty, there was a spark of hope in his eyes.

When they offered him some much-needed nourishment, Sugar Snap’s response was immediate. His tiny body, which had been so close to giving up, began to show signs of life. This pup wasn’t ready to surrender – not yet.

A True Fighter

The rescue team knew they had to act quickly. With the support of kind-hearted individuals who believed in their mission, they set Sugar Snap up for treatment.

A vital blood transfusion was administered, helping to stabilize his condition; and bring some much-needed energy back into his little body.

“His vet team is adding new meds to his treatment plan and continues to do everything they can for him while keeping him comfortable. He’s in excellent hands,” One Tail at a Time shared in an update on Facebook.

Though Sugar Snap faced one tough night where his blood pressure and glucose levels dipped dangerously low, another blood transfusion and a little more food made a world of difference.

“Some of his values dropped on Sunday which was alarming, so his veterinary team came up with a plan that included an NG tube and blood transfusion,” Their determination was unwavering, and after a few days, Sugar Snap began to show signs of improvement.

As his strength slowly returned, the medical team decided to remove his feeding tube, hoping that he could continue gaining weight on his own.

And he did – Sugar Snap’s resilience was nothing short of miraculous.

Not only did he start putting on weight, but he also began to stand and walk, proving that he was determined to overcome the odds.

Three weeks later, Sugar Snap left the emergency hospital on his own four paws, ready to start a new chapter in a foster home.

“Today, after three weeks, Sugar Snap left the emergency hospital walking on his own. He will go to foster with one of the veterinarians who treated him, where he will continue to get healthy and strong,” the rescue shared on a Facebook post.

A Forever Home

In his foster home, Sugar Snap thrived. Surrounded by love and care, he blossomed into the handsome, energetic dog he was always meant to be.

His health improved rapidly, and his playful spirit returned.

“We’re celebrating two weeks in foster and happy to report he’s weighing in at nearly 34lbs, is more mobile than ever, and has even learned how to beg for food. Can you believe this is the same dog?!” the rescue wrote, marveling at his transformation.

Within a month, Sugar Snap had doubled his weight, going from a mere 19 pounds to a healthy 40 pounds.

The foster mom, who happened to be one of the veterinarians who had treated him, opened her heart and home to this little warrior.

His progress was so remarkable that his foster mom realized she couldn’t let him go. The bond they had formed was unbreakable, and she decided to make it permanent.

Sugar Snap now enjoys life with his new family, which includes a dog brother, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle.

“Sugar now has a dog brother, Fitz, and a cat brother, Noodle. Not only is his mom a vet, but his dad too! We truly couldn’t have asked for a happier ending for this lucky Chicago stray,” One Tail at a Time concluded.
