They Thought This Abandoned Dog Had Turned to Stone, Until His Gentle Heart Peeked Through

Poleng was abandoned on the streets of Indonesia with one of the worst cases of mange his rescuers had ever seen, but urgent medical care, a loving foster home and one perfect adoption changed everything.

On the streets of Indonesia, a dog named Poleng was trying to survive after being abandoned.

He eventually wandered into a community where a kind family began feeding him and watching over him as best they could.

They cared deeply about him, but they could also see that he needed much more help than they were able to provide on their own.

When a team member from Little Steps Matter was nearby helping another dog, the family approached and asked if they could help Poleng too.

The rescue team was stunned by what they saw when they met him.

“The moment we saw Poleng, it was clear he had suffered tremendously,” Little Steps Matter wrote on Instagram.

His body was ravaged by severe mange, and his skin was painfully inflamed.

Thick, crusted layers covered him so heavily that he almost looked as though he had turned to stone.

For the rescuers, it was unlike almost anything they had seen before.

They said it was the worst case of mange they had ever encountered.

There was no question about what needed to happen next.

They rushed Poleng to the veterinarian for intensive care.

At that point, it seemed likely that his recovery would be long and difficult.

A dog in that much pain would need time, careful treatment and constant support.

Even so, the rescue team moved quickly because Poleng had already suffered far too long.

His condition was so severe that every day of treatment mattered.

What nobody knew yet was how much of Poleng’s true personality was waiting underneath all that pain.

For the moment, the goal was simply to help him feel safe and begin healing.

In those early days, his body had to do the hard work of letting go of layer after layer of damage.

The crusted scraps slowly started falling away as treatment began to work.

His skin began healing, and with that came a little relief.

That relief changed more than his appearance.

It also started changing how he responded to people around him.

For a long time, touch had simply meant pain.

Then, after only two weeks, Poleng already looked like a completely different dog.

For a case that had seemed certain to require a very long road, the change was remarkable.

His rescuers could finally begin to see the dog hidden beneath the severe mange.

The transformation was physical, but it quickly became emotional too.

“After all the scraps had fallen off and his skin was healing, he allowed us to touch him,” Sabine Kaufmann, founder of Little Steps Matter, told The Dodo.

That small milestone said everything about how much agony he had been living with before.

Once touching him no longer hurt, Poleng started opening up.

He began accepting cuddles and affection that had been impossible for him to enjoy before.

The dog who had once seemed trapped inside suffering revealed himself to be incredibly sweet.

Despite everything he had been through, he did not pull away from love forever.

Instead, he leaned into it as soon as he finally could.

That made his rescue all the more moving for everyone around him.

As the days passed, Poleng kept changing in ways that went beyond healing skin.

His rescuers got to watch him become softer, more trusting and more comfortable.

It is one thing to see wounds close.

It is another to watch a dog decide that he finally feels safe with human hands.

Poleng was no longer only surviving the aftermath of abandonment.

He was starting to show the loving personality that had been there all along.

After making significant progress, Poleng went back to the same family who had first helped him in the community.

That return mattered because they had been the ones to notice him, feed him and ask for help when rescuers were nearby.

Without them speaking up, his story might have gone very differently.

For a while, it looked as though he might be able to stay with them.

Unfortunately, they were not able to keep him long-term.

So once again, Little Steps Matter stepped in to make sure Poleng would stay on the right path.

The rescue found him a foster home, and that gave him the stability he still needed.

There, he continued to heal and thrive.

By then, the worst of his physical suffering was behind him.

That meant he finally had room to relax, play and let more of his real self come out.

He was not just getting healthier.

He was learning how life could feel when it included comfort, routine and kindness every day.

The further he got from the street, the easier it became to imagine a permanent home for him.

Four months later, that future finally arrived.

Poleng’s forever family found him after following his journey on Little Steps Matter’s social media pages.

They had fallen in love with him while watching his recovery unfold from one update to the next.

By the time they came forward, they were ready to give him the loving home he had always deserved.

For a dog who had once been abandoned in terrible condition, that kind of ending meant everything.

According to Kaufmann, Poleng is now living a dream life with his family.

“They adore him so much,” Kaufmann said.

“He was really the worst case we ever saw.”

“And then he turned out to be the most goofy, funny, sweetest boy.”

That description feels especially powerful because of where he started.

The dog who once looked almost like stone is now cherished for being joyful, silly and loving.

His rescue also reflects the chain of people who changed his life.

First there was the family who noticed him and refused to look away.

They may not have had the resources to treat a case that severe, but they understood that Poleng needed real intervention.

Then there was the Little Steps Matter team, who recognized immediately just how urgent his situation was.

They moved fast, got him to a veterinarian and gave him the intensive care that made every next step possible.

Then came patient treatment and the chance to discover that touch did not always have to hurt.

That shift may sound small, but for Poleng it marked the beginning of a completely different life.

After that, he had a foster home where he could keep healing and keep growing into himself.

In foster care, he was no longer defined by the condition he arrived in.

He could be a dog learning to rest, to trust and to enjoy the ordinary comforts that once felt out of reach.

And finally, he found the family who had already fallen for him before they ever brought him home.

They had watched his journey online, rooted for him from afar and decided they wanted to be the people who gave him his permanent happy ending.

Poleng’s story begins with abandonment and terrible suffering, but it does not stay there.

It becomes a story about intervention at exactly the right moment.

It becomes a story about how quickly a life can change when compassionate people step in and refuse to give up.

Most of all, it becomes a story about a dog whose sweetness survived even the worst pain.
