Abandoned on the streets of Indonesia and suffering from one of the worst cases of mange his rescuers had ever seen, Poleng found help, healing and, eventually, the family who adored him.
When Poleng was abandoned on the streets of Indonesia, he was left in agonizing condition.
Still, he somehow made his way into a community where one kind family refused to ignore him.

They fed him and watched over him, but they could see he needed far more help than they could provide.
That chance came when a Little Steps Matter team member was nearby helping another dog.
The family approached and asked if the rescue could also take a look at Poleng.
The moment the team saw him, they were shocked by how severe his condition was.
“The moment we saw Poleng, it was clear he had suffered tremendously,” Little Steps Matter wrote on Instagram.
His body was ravaged by severe mange, and his skin was painfully inflamed.
Thick, crusted layers covered him so heavily that rescuers said he almost looked as though he had turned to stone.
Even for a team experienced with neglected animals, Poleng stood out immediately.
They had never seen such a bad case of mange and rushed him to the vet for intensive care.
At first, it seemed obvious that his recovery would be slow.
A dog in that much pain usually needs a long time before any visible change begins.

But the biggest shift had already happened the moment he reached safety.
Poleng no longer had to survive alone on the street.
He was finally with people who understood how urgent his condition was.
That meant medication, monitoring and the kind of careful treatment he could never have gotten by himself.
His early care focused on reducing pain and helping his damaged skin begin to recover.
No one expected a dramatic turnaround in such a short period.
Then Poleng surprised everyone.
After only two weeks, he already looked like a completely different dog.
As the heavy scraps and crusted layers began to fall away, healthier skin started appearing underneath.
The physical change was stunning, but another milestone mattered just as much.
“After all the scraps had fallen off and his skin was healing, he allowed us to touch him,” Sabine Kaufmann, founder of Little Steps Matter, told The Dodo.

That moment revealed how much pain had shaped his behavior.
He had not been pulling away because he was unfriendly or unwilling to trust.
He had simply been hurting too much to tolerate contact.
Once his body began feeling better, his real personality had room to emerge.
He started accepting affection from the people caring for him.
The dog who had once looked almost unreachable was suddenly leaning into comfort.
For rescuers, that kind of emotional opening can be just as moving as a medical improvement.
Poleng was no longer only enduring each day.
He was beginning to enjoy it.
Every cuddle he accepted showed that his body hurt less than it had before.

Every calm interaction suggested that trust was returning too.
His caregivers got to watch him shift from guarded and miserable to soft and affectionate.
That transformation made clear that healing was happening inside and out.
The sweet dog hidden beneath the pain was finally becoming visible.
And once he felt safe enough, that loving side seemed to appear more each day.
After making significant progress, Poleng went back to the family who had first helped him in the community.
It was a meaningful return because they were the ones who had seen him suffering and chose not to look away.
They had fed him, watched over him and made sure he had a chance to be rescued.
Without their compassion, he might never have met the team that changed everything.
For a while, it seemed possible that they might be able to keep him permanently.
Unfortunately, they ended up not being able to care for him long-term.

So Little Steps Matter stepped in again to make sure the next chapter of his recovery stayed on track.
They found him a foster home where he could keep healing in stability.
That foster home gave Poleng exactly what he needed after emergency treatment.
He had safety, consistency and space to continue recovering without interruption.
His skin kept improving, and his body continued getting stronger.
At the same time, his personality had more and more room to blossom.
The dog who had first stunned rescuers with the severity of his mange was now winning people over for completely different reasons.
He was goofy.
He was funny.
He was sweet.
Kaufmann later said he had been the worst case the rescue had ever seen.

He also turned out to be one of the most charming dogs they had ever helped.
That contrast made Poleng’s story unforgettable.
At the beginning, people saw a dog buried beneath pain, inflammation and thick layers of crusted skin.
Later, they saw a happy dog with a playful spirit and a huge capacity for affection.
His recovery was not only about the visible healing on the outside.
It was also about finally being comfortable enough to act like himself.
That was what made the change feel so complete.
The more he healed, the more obvious it became that a bright, loving personality had been there all along.
It had just been hidden beneath suffering.
In foster care, that hidden part of him kept coming forward.

Months passed, and Poleng continued to thrive.
Then, four months later, the family meant for him finally found him.
They had been following his journey on Little Steps Matter’s social media pages.
As they watched him recover and open up, they fell in love with him.
What made that especially meaningful was that they understood exactly where he had started.
They had not only seen the cheerful updates that came later.
They had seen how grave his condition was in the beginning too.
They watched him fight his way, step by step, toward comfort, trust and joy.
So when they decided to adopt him, they knew the full story behind the dog they loved.
And they could not wait to give him the home he deserved.
The ending to Poleng’s journey was everything his rescuers had hoped for.

“He’s living a dream life with his family now,” Kaufmann said.
“They adore him so much.”
She also said he was really the worst case the rescue had ever seen.
Then, in the happiest possible twist, he became “the most goofy, funny, sweetest boy.”
Poleng’s story stayed true from beginning to end because each person who crossed his path helped carry him toward something better.
First, a family in the community kept him going and asked for help when they knew he needed more.
Then a rescue team recognized the urgency of his condition and acted immediately.
Veterinary care relieved the pain that had made every touch unbearable.
A foster home gave him the time and stability he needed to keep healing and to let his personality unfold.
Finally, his forever family saw his journey, loved him for all of it and welcomed him into the life he had always deserved.
