Truck Driver Rescues Shivering Dog Found in Roadside Ditch

A brave truck driver emerged as a hero when he noticed a distressed, trembling puppy abandoned in a ditch on the roadside in St. Louis, Missouri.

His alertness and dedication to making a difference were crucial in rescuing the helpless animal.

Although the truck driver was unable to stop his vehicle at the moment, he managed to contact the Stray Rescue of St, informing them of the puppy’s dire situation. This call helped ensure that the little pup, in desperate need of help, received the assistance it required.

The driver’s approach highlights how, even amidst our daily routines, we have the power to change any lives around us by extending a helping hand to those in need.

Response from the Rescue Team

Upon receiving the call, Stray Rescue of St. Louis acted swiftly. The Good Samaritan’s report of a shivering, brown, and white puppy in distress led them to investigate immediately.

They found the small, injured dog and named her Odella, in honor of the truck driver named Odell, who had alerted them about her condition.

When Odella first saw Donna Lochmann, the Chief Lifesaving Officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, her tail began to wag.

Despite her fear and hunger, she’s a friendly little angel.

However, it was soon discovered that the pup was in severe pain from injuries sustained after being hit by a car.

“We couldn’t tell at first, but sadly, our clinic informed us that she had some significant injuries. The X-rays indicate a dislocated hip and broken foot,” the rescue shared on their blog post.

Odella, a six-month-old puppy, required extensive medical attention to recover from her injuries.

“To picture her quivering in that ditch all by herself and hurting breaks our hearts. We are so grateful to the truck driver who somehow spotted her and saved her life. Her healing journey begins today,”

the rescue organization noted.

Odella’s Journey to Recovery

To save her leg, doctors worked diligently to reposition her dislocated hip and secure it with a splint.

The doctors and the rescue team did everything they could to ensure that the sweet little pup would be able to keep her leg.

The road to recovery was more challenging than anticipated due to an additional femur fracture. Still, after several months of dedicated care, Odella regained her health and mobility and was able to run and play again.

Throughout her recovery, Odella stayed with her foster mom, Donna Lochmann.

Donna, who had previously adopted other rescue animals, quickly became attached to Odella.

The bond was undeniable, and it became clear that Odella would not be leaving Donna’s home.

Donna shared on Facebook, “She just never left. She came in, unpacked her bags, and that was pretty much it!

Today, Odella thrives in her loving home with Donna and her furry siblings.

“She has the happiest personality and bounces from one dog to another to find one that will keep playing! She loves her toys and peanut butter kongs,” Donna shared.

This joyful life would not have been possible without the initial act of kindness from Odell, whose single call led to a dramatic turnaround in Odella’s life.

The truck driver’s quick thinking and the dedicated efforts of Stray Rescue of St. Louis transformed Odella’s life from one of pain and isolation to one of joy and love.
