Lonely Pup Waits By His Kennel Forever While Other Dogs Gets To Go Home

Neglected Shelter Dog Watched as Others Got Adopted, While He Remained Behind Bars

While stray dogs wander the streets, doing their best to survive, they silently yearn for a warm home and a loving family.

Once they are rescued and brought to a shelter, their hearts swell with hope that someone will notice them and offer them a place to call home. Nicholas, a gentle shelter pup, harbored that hope as he eagerly awaited each visitor, standing by his kennel door whenever he heard footsteps approaching.

Just when Nicholas began to despair of ever finding a forever home, something extraordinary happened.

Nicholas Longed for a Family

When Nicholas was rescued by Orange County Animal Services, a rescue organization based in Orlando, Florida, he was a timid and fearful little dog.

Over time, as he began to feel safe and cared for, Nicholas relaxed and quickly grew attached to the shelter staff and volunteers who showed him kindness.

Every time potential adopters visited the shelter, Nicholas would wag his tail excitedly, hoping they would notice him and give him the chance to win their hearts.

He eagerly greeted each visitor, wagging his tail in hopes of catching their attention. But as the days went by, his hopeful gestures were met with silence, and he remained unnoticed.

Nicholas watched many of his fellow shelter residents leave in the arms of their new families.

Each time, his heart sank a little more, and he began to lose hope that he would ever leave the shelter behind.

All He Needed Was a Chance

Seeing Nicholas continually passed over broke the hearts of the shelter staff. People tended to adopt smaller dogs, which were often seen as more desirable.

But Nicholas loved the outdoors. Although shelter volunteers took him for a walk every day, it was never enough. After each walk, Nicholas would resist going back into his kennel, clearly needing more time to play and explore.

His friends at the shelter were certain that Nicholas would be adopted if only potential adopters would take the time to meet him and get to know his gentle spirit.

We knew what kind of dog he was, we knew he was amazing. He’s one of those dogs that just likes people. He likes attention, he wants to snuggle. He wants to be on your lap,” said Bryant from Orange County Animal Services.

Grateful for All the Love

Though Nicholas had been the longest resident at the shelter, he never grew bitter or resentful. He cherished every moment he got to spend with his human friends, always greeting them with joy and affection.

The staff and volunteers loved him dearly, rooting for him to find the home he so desperately wanted. They shared his story on social media and even got it featured on the local news, but still, Nicholas remained unnoticed.

No one came to see him or give him the chance he so desperately needed.

Undeterred, the shelter team came up with a new plan: a special event just for Nicholas. They called it Pick-Nick Saturday, hoping that one of the visitors would see what a special dog Nicholas was and take him home.

A week before the event, a woman visited the shelter and was immediately drawn to Nicholas.

She just genuinely came in and fell in love with the dog organically. She met him and she liked him and she couldn’t stop thinking about him,” Bryant said.

Nicholas’s heart soared as he finally found a home.

Sadly, Nicholas’s new beginning was short-lived. Despite her deep affection for him, his new mom was unable to spend the necessary time helping him adjust to his new environment. When left alone in the apartment, Nicholas felt scared and barked more than usual, causing the neighbors to complain.

With a heavy heart, Nicholas’s mom had to return him to the shelter in Orlando, Florida.

The Happy Ending He Deserved

Nicholas’s return was a somber moment for his human friends, who had to watch him walk back into the kennel. But Nicholas, blissfully unaware that he had been given up, was simply overjoyed to see his old friends again. The shelter team refused to give up on him and continued sharing his story, determined to find him the forever home he deserved.

On April 29th, 2023, Orange County Animal Services announced the news they had all been hoping for: Nicholas had finally found his forever home.

His shelter friends were emotional as they said their goodbyes, but their hearts were full of joy knowing that Nicholas would finally get the love and happiness he had waited so long for.

Nicholas’s new dad came to take him home, and the charming dog could hardly contain his excitement. With his tail wagging furiously and a wide grin on his face, Nicholas hopped into the car, ready to begin his new life. His family promised him that he would be loved and cherished forever and that they would never give him up.

I am over the moon that Nicholas finally found the happiness and love he had been searching for. This sweet dog truly deserved his happy ending, and I’m grateful that he now has a family that will love him unconditionally.
